Technology Solutions

The following is very opinionated. I have had numerous technology debates over the years, and can already hear a "yeah but" to every one of the following recommendations, but I stand by these recommendations having had to clean up the mess created by cheaper, inferior solutions. If you come to me for a solution, I will recommend the BEST solution, not necessarily the cheapest. What often appears to be the cheapest solution will actually cost you more money in the long run. Inexpensive but well engineered is better!

  • Wordpress

    I've been building websites with Wordpress since 2005! Wordpress has evolved from simple "blogware" into the premier content management system of choice. (Over 60% of all websites use it!) I've looked at other software such as Drual, Joomla and dozens of others and none of them provides the capabilites, stability and upgradability that Wordpress has. If I build you a website, I generally build with an HTML/CSS front end for speed, and a Wordpress back-end for additional SEO and functionality.

  • Server Technology

    Linux, Apache, MySQL, & PHP - is commonly refered to as "the LAMP stack" by serious web professionals. I've been working with Linux since 1993 before anyone really knew what Linux was. Since then, Linux has become the dominant server platform. Apache web server has been the dominant web server as well, and coupled with the MySQL database server and PHP - this combination of technologies provides a robust stable platform for web sites. As websites have evolved from simply serving pages into "Web appliances", I've stayed in the mainstream with these technologies. As other technologies emerge, I'll be using them as well.

    Cpanel emerged in recent years as my preferred webhosting control and management interface. CPanel provides you with an iconized management interface for managing 99.9% of all webserver and domain functions. it is THE most complete web management platform on the market. If your webhosting solution does not have CPanel - you are working harder, not smarter. I've worked with GoDaddy hosting - not a good solution. I've worked with 1&1, Fatcow and several others - seriously folks these are really lacking and you are not getting your money's worth. I've also worked with Hsphere, and it is a close second to CPanel.

  • Office Technology

    I've been in the technology business since 1983. I've worked with everything from DOS, Novell, Unix (AT&T, HP, Sun, Solaris, ZENIX), Windowx 3.1 - Windows XP, Linux, and Mac OSX. I've worked in small offices, large IT departments, in banks, and in IT companies. I've seen the rise and fall of Windows and would only recommened Windows products to my worst enemies. If you're looking for a solid technology solution, I recommend a Unix based solution - i.e. Linux or Mac servers, with Mac desktops. Do not whine to me about the cost of Macs. The slightly higher cost of a Mac is actually made up for in increased productivity and stability. The actual cost of running cheap Wintel junk is higher due to viruses and shoddy hardware design. Successful Windows implementations are actually very expensive in comparison to a Mac/Linux combination. Wintel systems become slower and slower with age and the constant upkeep and lost CPU power of having to run virus and spyware scanners is exhausting. The weak and sloppy design of the Windows operating system architecture is prone to viruses and spyware. Microsoft successfully created a generation of people who hate computers, while Apple has created a generation of people who love their products and are getting things done!
